A user can put themselves into a classic arcade game or turn a CEO into a clumsy thief in a fake security-cam clip. That novelty is the app's engine—novelty that hooks.

Here's what stood out: the interface is deliberately familiar. You swipe, you like, you remix. It looks like TikTok because it is built to feel like TikTok. A social feed of auto-generated visuals—some playful, some grotesque—arrives at scale. And when a public figure like Sam Altman makes his likeness freely available, the feed quickly becomes a carnival mirror of his face, appearing in dozens of surreal scenarios.

From research lab to snackable content

There is an odd tension at the heart of Sora 2. OpenAI began with a quasi-messianic mission: build artificial general intelligence for the benefit of humanity. Yet here is a product that behaves like a sugar-coated time-suck. The company says it's experimenting on the way to bigger technical goals, but the app also looks like a revenue play—an attention engine that can funnel users toward paid subscriptions and commerce features.

Call it the Facebookification of a research lab. Executives and engineers who once wrote feeds and ad infrastructure for social platforms have crossed into this space. The result: a tool that is scientifically impressive and socially familiar—and therefore extremely good at getting people to stare.

Why the technology feels both miraculous and opaque

It is tempting to reduce progress to simple steps: more data, more GPUs, better algorithms. But generating convincing video is technically messy. A single animated clip requires frame-by-frame coherence, synchronized audio, and a kind of learned choreography across time. Engineers talk about solvers and optimization tricks; journalists liken model-building to tending orchids—sometimes beautiful, sometimes inexplicable.

That opacity is part of what makes the technology unnerving. When a model can convincingly put a person in a situation they never experienced—especially one showing illegal behavior—our trust in video as evidence frays. And the pace of change is such that yesterday's grotesque novelty becomes today’s indistinguishable imitation.

Sora 2 introduced safeguards: you must grant permission to allow others to use your likeness. OpenAI is spending enormous sums on compute. Sam Altman has framed consumer-facing apps as a way to raise capital for larger research objectives. That calculus explains why a lab would build a playful, attention-grabbing product: money buys GPUs. But monetization brings incentives—engagement metrics, advertising, commerce integrations—that can steer product roadmaps toward attention-maximizing features rather than long-term social value.

So we watch a paradox: a company that says it wants to free us from drudgery may also be optimizing for the very behaviors that trap us on our phones.

For all my skepticism, there's a small, stubborn optimism: people keep craving authentic voices. In a landscape filled with increasingly polished fakes, formats grounded in real human presence—podcasts, newsletters, intimate communities—retain persuasive value. I find myself preferring a crackling human interview to a flawless but soulless simulation. The appetite for human connection looks stronger than the appetite for novelty alone.

Honestly, I didn't expect to end up defending podcasts here. But there's a logic: long-form, slow-thinking content requires attention and yields depth. That depth is rare; it becomes valuable when the rest of the feed is fast, shiny, and empty.

There will also be cultural costs—some small, some large. My hope is modest: that we keep valuing human-authored spaces where the signals of authorship and care remain legible. That may be the best defense against a world where everything is a convincing simulation of everything else.
